Playas del Coco - Coco Beach

Playas del Coco is one of the best known beaches in Costa Rica. The name itself can be found all over the world as the it translates to "Coco's Beach" and people used this name for beaches with coco's palmtrees everywhere.

If you're looking to fly down from San José or even coming in with an internatuional flight, Daniel Oduber International Airport, Liberia, is located quite close by and from there you have easy access to most well known Guanacaste beaches by car, bus and taxi.

Playas del Coco
is one of the most visited beaches in Costa Rica, Located in Guanacaste squeezed inbetween a great number of well known beaches you can use Playas del coco as a base for further excursions!

It's a relatively quiet place but tourism is increasing and so are the number of hotels and condos in the area. Recently the construction of villas has increased as well and all of this have increased land value as well as rental costs in this area.

Sport fishing is big here and every year more and more sport fishing and deep fishing fans come here, Playas del Coco is known primarily as the starting point for surfers to reach places like Ollie’s Point and Witches Rock, where the waves are great. The beach is also an amazing spot for scuba diving, with a great number of tour and dive companies in place.

Playas del Coco has a well developed infrastructure, with good roads and plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, discos, casinos, hotels, resorts and markets. The nightlife here is also quite good but is still a bit slow outside the big weekend like Christmas and Easter week. DUring the big holidays expect to find a lot of people here partying ‘beach style.’

The beach of Playas del Coco itself is a grayish brown and doesn't look like the more inviting white sand beaches found around the Guanacaste coastline. The tide here is normally quite low but I still advice you to keep close control of the tide as there been an increasing number of larger waves on the Costa Rican west coast the last years.

"Never Underestimate The Tide!"
I can't stress this hard enough. Every year people die from playing around with the sea. Costa Rica has a tide that changes the sea so much that you can find waves well over 4-5 meters. Add to this some wind and the sun going down and you have a disaster on your hands.

The local people know the tide and the daily newspaper normaly have the information as well. You can also plan ahead and check for the tidal information at El Instituto de Meterológico de Costa Rica.

The Beach
Surrounded by steep cliffs and hills, this horseshoe shaped bay area is the ideal place to have some fun. However, if you are looking for a quiet spot to relax, try staying away from the center of town, where most of the fun happens.

From Playas del Coco you can also head out to Pelonas Islands, Catalinas and Bat Islands as well, which are excellent sites to spot turtles, sharks and octopuses in the natural environment.

Besides fishing excursions, the sailing here is also quite good. Many tourists also use Playas del Coco as a base camp because of its affordable accommodations and closeness to many other beaches, when touring the Guanacaste region.
